BOOKSTORE participant Suzan Kolen presents a fantastic solo show!
Suzan is 25 years old, and recently graduated with distinction from the Academy of Visual Arts in Tilburg, presently lives and works in Amsterdam.
Her works are both feminine and intimidating, and the stories which sometimes underpin them only serve to enhance these qualities. She works from her own experiences and views, and in doing so attempts, through the medium of large-scale works of embroidery, to find a place for herself in contemporary society – a society which she both embraces and rejects. As embroidery is a very intensive and time-consuming process, she has a lot of time for reflection, perhaps too much.
In the exhibition Crazy: the new Sexy, she has attempted to give as wide a vision as possible of herself and her work. The exhibition is both an opening and a closing off; an opening of new chances and moments, and a conclusion to the project Sexwaves, which she has been working on since the age of twenty.
